If there are bad sectors on your hard drive, the cloning process would also be affected.Ĥ. The original disk is old and has bad sectors. The USB cable can also affect the transfer speed.ģ. The USB connection is too slow to read and write. That is to say, the larger the size of the data, the longer time it would take.Ģ. It would take a long time to clone a large amount of data. Why does the cloning process take forever? What are the main causes? After our analysis, we have listed the top 6 reasons below.ġ. 6 Reasons - Why Does Cloning Process Take So Long If your cloning process takes 87 minutes to clone 500GB data, it is the average speed. So if your cloning speed is 100MB/s, it takes about 17 minutes to clone a 100GB hard drive. This reality holds for the newer high-speed SATA drives, which claim to be able to transfer 300MBps (Megabytes per second), but the actual transfer rates that should be used to calculate a cloning process should be lowered to roughly one half of that speed. So we must know that when reviewing drive transfer rates, keep in mind that the rates quoted are "burst" rates, and not sustained transfer rates.Ī Seagate drive might claim that it can transfer data at 100MBps (megabytes per second), but it will not be able to move a gigabyte's worth of data at this speed in the real world. It is also crucial to determine the method that will be used to clone the drive. This is the single most critical factor in estimating the time to clone a hard drive. Is this going too slow, and what should I do?" Analysis - How Long Does It Take to Clone a Hard DriveĮstablish how much data is on the hard drive to be cloned. I started the cloning process yesterday 24 hours ago, and it's only 18%. The copying speed starts fast, then drops down without any reason. I want to clone a 256GB hard disk to my external hard drive. It seems that it cloning process is taking forever.

Full stepsĮaseUS Disk Copy is the best disk clone software, which creates an identical copy of data. Type task manager in the Windows search bar and select "Task Manager.".

Full stepsĭownload, install and run EaseUS Disk Copy on a healthy Windows computer. If your cloning process is slow, SATA is an excellent choice to solve this problem. According to the Dell & Crucial documentation, the Crucial SSD should work (I noted the Intel SSD is SATA and Crucial NVMe but that should not matter). If you have lots of data to clone on your hard drive or other devices, you need to wait patiently.

So I am at a loss as to why the Crucial will not boot the PC. Macruim, EaseUS and AOMEI cloning software can all see the drive when mounted in the Mokin controller. I think this is a separate issue with the Mokin from the no boot problem but it is limiting my options here. I would try to clone the Intel drive using Crucial's cloning software (Acronis I believe) but their software will not recognize the Crucial drive when in the Mokin controller. I can boot the PC however from USB using an MS Win10 install flashdrive - so I think my USB parameters are set correctly in BIOS (v1.6.0). The Mokin enclosure does not support SATA so I can't use the Intel SSd in that. "Mark Partition as Active" is greyed out also. I can see the Crucial drive when installed in the Mokin enclosure in Win Explorer and when viewing the disks in Win Disk Management app, the Crucial primary partition does NOT show Boot, Page File, Crash Dump properties like the Intel disk does - but I can't find a way to force this on the Crucial drive. However, when the Crucial SSD is put in the PC M.2 slot, it is not recognized and won't boot the OS. I cloned the Intel drive with Macruim Reflect software using an external Mokin M.2 NVMe USB external controller/enclosure to mount the Crucial SSD without any issue.

I'm trying to upgrade my primary SSD from the stock Intel M.2 250GB drive to a new 500 GB Crucial P2 2280.
